Keeley Compressor For Bass Players Alerter l'administrateur Recommander à un ami Lien de l'article

The Keeley Bassist Compressor, introduced at the 2014 NAMM show, is now available for pre-sale and will be shipping soon. Here's how Keeley describes it...

The Bassist Compressor is built around the exotic and extremely high fidelity THAT Corp. 4320.  Think of it as very affordable studio-grade dbx compressor in stomp box format!  It uses high performance Voltage Controlled Amplifiers, on board true-RMS detector, and ultra high performance op-amps to bring you the very best quality. VCA compressors give you precise control.  Therefore they are directly suited to bass guitars. The Keeley Bassist Compressor is both musical and very transparent.  Where our older compressors were based on the CA3080 or the LM13700 and are perfect for single coil guitars, the new Keeley Bassist Compressor has no problems with active pre-amps and line level input signals!  Not only can the Keeley Bassist handle astonishingly large signals, it has an incredible bandwidth of over 20 KHz and incredibly low noise.  No detail in your bass guitar's tone will be lost.  The Keeley Bassist will be a sound investment in your tone, you now have rack-mount quality at your feet.

Compression and Threshold

When bass players use the Keeley Bassist Compressor they will be greeted with a sound that is more easily amplified and heard.  Using the effect as a limiting amplifier saves your speakers from clipping and distortion.  Set the Threshold to look for peaks in your signal and limit distortion from your amplifier or damage to your speakers.  Simply watch the Threshold Indicator light to see what type of playing you want to limit, it's that easy!  Next set the Compression Ratio Control to determine how much squash you want when the signal is above Threshold.  Set Compression all of the way down for no (1:1) compression and use the Gain control as a boost!  Set Compression all of the way up for an above-Threshold hard-knee limiter.

A typical soft compressor setting would be 2:1 above threshold.  A good starting ratio for the Compression control may be 4:1 as it generally sounds good with bass guitar.  A ratio of 5:1 or 6:1 will sound great for slap or funk-style playing.  For synth-bass try 10:1 Compression.

Attack and Release

There is a certain figure that just sounds good as far as compression goes; and that's 125 dB/second.  With feed forward compressors that use this type of true-RMS detector you use a single time constant parameter.  The timing capacitor gives you attack and release times that are adaptive to your playing level or the signal input to the compressor.  Bottom line: Attack and Release times vary on program content.  Attack times are generally speaking, about 100 times faster than release times.

Coolief gives local woman her life back Alerter l'administrateur Recommander à un ami Lien de l'article

This time last year Donna White of Hickory spent most days confined to her home. Chronic knee pain from Osteoarthritis made it almost impossible to enjoy life. “I was basically stuck in the chair,” Donna told me. Then she turned to Unifour Pain Center in Hickory, part of Frye Regional Medical Center. There, Doctor Felicia Cain told White about Coolief, a treatment for Osteoarthritis.  Dr. Cain says it is helping patients get their lives back.

Using a local anesthetic, Dr. Cain places a needle in three different locations in the knee. The areas are near the nerves that tell us we're in pain. “This tip generates an electrical force that causes ions to move about and shifting and the cell membrane of the nerve and breaks it down,” Dr. Cain explained. With Coolief radio frequency versus tradition RF there is constant cooling of water at the tip of the needle. Dr. Cain says that gives her a great advantage, “What that does is it pushes that heat out further, creating a bigger lesion in the area treated.” That, according to the doctor, means longer lasting pain relief.

“So then this nerve is no longer able to tell the brain I'm having pain,” Dr. Cain said. As for Donna White it's been several months and she's still feeling the relief from the Coolief procedure. “I'm a whole new person. I'm able to go shopping, I went on vacation, I even chase a 15 month old baby all day,” White said.

The length of pain relief varies, according to the doctor. But so far she is very pleased with the results many patients are report being pain free for 6 months to as along as 18 months. As a caregiver the doctor told me, “It is significant and if we can help those people and get them moving again and give them back a life! That's great!”

TriQuint Beats on Q3 Earnings with Improved Product Mix Alerter l'administrateur Recommander à un ami Lien de l'article

TriQuint Semiconductor, Inc. third-quarter results beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate for both earnings and revenues, benefiting from its portfolio restructuring efforts towards higher-value solutions. The RF(radio frequency) solutions provider reported non-GAAP earnings of 28 cents in third quarter 2014 versus 16 cents in the year-ago quarter. The recurring earnings of 24 cents per share comfortably beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 20 cents. The considerable improvement was primarily attributable to higher revenues, strong demand and an improved product mix.

GAAP net income came in at $26.2 million or 14 cents per share compared with $13.6 million or 8 cents per share in the year-ago quarter.

Revenues & Margins

Quarterly revenues were $272.1 million, up 8% year over year, due to robust growth and increased penetration across segments. Revenues for the reported quarter exceeded the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $261 million.

On an end-market basis, quarterly revenues in the Mobile Devices market experienced sequential growth of 28% driven by strong demand from customers in China. The Networks segment surged 45% year over year. Infrastructure & Defense sales were flat sequentially. Infrastructure witnessed robust demand for base station products in China, growing 24% year over year. The book-to-bill ratio for the reported quarter came in at 1.40.

Gross margin for the third quarter of 2014 was 45.5%, up from 36.8% in the prior-year quarter, driven by product mix and strong factory execution. Additionally, operating expenses were slightly up sequentially to $87.8 million due to merger and integration-related costs.

During the quarter, TriQuint introduced a record 55 new products, strengthening its strategic position in the RF industry.

Balance Sheet

At quarter end, cash and investments were $247.9 million, driven by strong operating performance and cash proceeds from employee stock option exercises.

Proposed Merger with RFMD

TriQuint’s proposed merger with rival RF Micro Devices Inc. is on track to conclude in the second half of the year. The combined entity resulting from the merger of TriQuint and RF Micro will be named Qorvo Inc.  The consolidated company will bring all the critical RF components essential for fabricating mobile devices, under a common platform to create an undisputed market leader with a diversified product portfolio. This, in turn, would translate into better bargaining power and pricing strength for the combined entity. Also, in the mobile space, these two companies have complementary roadmaps with negligible market overlap.

The merger will offer synergistic benefits and increase the profitability of the new company through economies of scale and mutual sharing of manufacturing expertise, research and development costs, and adjustment of staffing expenses.

The transaction is expected to generate $75 million of cost savings in the first year of its operation, followed by another $75 million in the second year. The merger is expected to be accretive to non-GAAP earnings in the first full fiscal year of its operations.

Going forward, TriQuint expects fourth-quarter 2014 revenues in the range of $330 million to $340 million, indicating continued sequential improvement. Adjusted net income is expected between 40 cents and 45 cents per share.

Non-GAAP gross margin is projected in the range of 46%–48%, driven by better product mix, higher yields and lower factory costs. Additionally, strategic investments combined with solid operational excellence are expected to propel gross margin performance through a 14-year high in 2014 with more margin upside expected in 2015.

TriQuint currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Other stocks that look promising and are worth a look now include NeoPhotonics Corporation and Texas Instruments Inc, both carrying a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
