Malfunctioning Warning Sirens Confuse Residents Alerter l'administrateur Recommander à un ami Lien de l'article

When warning sirens blared in Fort Worth last Thursday, fear turned to confusion.

“And it went off and they just kept going off over and over again to the point I came out here to look around to see if there was weather coming up,” said Becky Wright who works at Meadowbrook Golf Course near one of the sirens.

“Well, I was kind of confused!” laughed Gary Utley who lives Meadowbrook neighborhood. “It was overcast but it wasn’t cloudy. And it went off and it didn’t sound like it was real loud, probably about half tone or have pitch,” said golfer Gary Utley.

The sirens had malfunctioned.

The sirens can only be activated by computer or radio signal. So what set off the false alarms?

“I think it looks like radio,” said the cities emergency coordinator Juan Ortiz. “We’ve already isolated the software. We did that over the weekend and concluded that is not the problem.”

Fort Worth emergency planners believe a stray radio signal switched 6 sirens on in east and north parts of the city.

The city has isolated the parts of the system where the problem occurred to prevent it from happening again.

But it’s still trying to track down where the stray signal came from.

Investigators say it is possible someone intentionally broadcast a signal on that frequency to set off the system.

But, they believe it’s far more likely that construction or work crews powered up some outdated radio equipment that operates on the same wavelength.

The city is searching urgently for the source of the signals saying it is a top priority.

“We’re checking with surrounding communities that have similar equipment to make sure their equipment is not the potential source of the problem,” Ortiz said. “It is my top priority. And we’re going to get it resolved,” said Ortiz.

Skyworks Solutions Big Winner In Apple iPhone 6 Chips Alerter l'administrateur Recommander à un ami Lien de l'article

How sweet is it to win a slice of the Apple iPhone 6 business?

It should be like candy for analog chipmaker and IBD Leaderboard stock Skyworks Solutions, a key supplier for the new Apple smartphone.

The Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus use chips from Skyworks, Avago Technologies and other firms, according to findings from tech repair firm iFixit, which opened up iPhones bought in Melbourne, Australia.

Multiple power amplifier components from Skyworks were found in the iPhone 6 teardowns, Sterne Agee analyst Vijay Rakesh told IBD.

In terms of iPhone 6 component suppliers, "big winners" are Skyworks, Avago and NXP Semiconductors "with content up 30%-90% from previous iPhone 5s models," he said in a research note.

Rakesh estimates about $4 worth of content comes from Skyworks in every new iPhone 6. The opportunity for Skyworks, he adds, depends on the number of iPhones Apple sells.

He cites Apple's Sept. 22 announcement that it sold over 10 million new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models, a record, just three days after the launch Sept. 19.

"Apple is always a big catalyst for all smartphone component suppliers," Rakesh said.

Stock Amps Up

Skyworks' stock on Sept. 19 notched its highest closing price since 2000, ending at 57.68 after the Apple iPhone 6 teardown news. It closed up 3.4% Wednesday to 58.84. But Skyworks powered up well before the Apple iPhone 6 debut. It has gained 106% this year.

In an interview with IBD, Skyworks CEO David Aldrich would not comment on whether Skyworks is a supplier for the iPhone 6, although the iFixit teardowns found the technology inside.

"I am not at liberty to comment about specific companies," he said. "But Skyworks has become very successful at increasing our content with all of our smartphone customers."

Skyworks develops and manufacturers high-performance analog semiconductor products. Its portfolio includes amplifiers, attenuators, battery chargers, circulators, DC/DC converters, demodulators, detectors, diodes, directional couplers and infrastructure RF (radio frequency) subsystems.

Its semiconductors enable wireless connectivity in smartphones, tablets and other devices.

Leveraging core technologies, Skyworks supports automotive, broadband, wireless infrastructure, energy management, GPS, industrial, medical, military, wireless networking, smartphone and tablet applications.

Skyworks has been on a roll on the financial front. It's seen double-digit sales and earnings growth in all but one of the past seven quarters. Its growth accelerated in the most recent quarter to the fastest pace since mid-2011. Earnings rose 54% to 83 cents a share. Sales climbed 35% to $587 million.

Toshiba introduces low-power integrated circuits Alerter l'administrateur Recommander à un ami Lien de l'article

Toshiba Corporation recently announced the launch of "TC35670FTG", which is a support low power (LE) Bluetooth communication and Near Field Communication (NFC) tags low-power Type 3 dual functional integration circuit (IC). Sample shipment starts immediately.

Recently, more and more intelligent Bluetooth [2] to provide a low-power Bluetooth devices are compatible. Toshiba's new IC belonging to low-power Bluetooth IC series, and provides two key features: Bluetooth and NFC tags feature pairing ease; long-term standby button battery-driven devices. The IC will promote the popularity of low-power Bluetooth communication technology on small devices, such as wearable health devices, sensors, toys, as well as the most compelling next-touch start smart phone accessories.

When Previously, equipment manufacturers design supports Bluetooth and NFC tag two communication systems must be separately integrated IC for Bluetooth and NFC tags. Toshiba's new approach provides a design that helps minimize the number of parts, reduce 30 percent of the assembly area, and shorten development time.

NFC label component has one for storing data 1.5KB E2PROM, device manufacturers can use low-power Bluetooth and NFC tags to access, in order to connect each I2C interface, so that each system can easily handle the data.

These features make the new device can support the following three ways:

1 The low-power Bluetooth and NFC tags placed in standby mode, the first priority access connections.

2 by adding NFC tags feature low power consumption can be achieved easily paired Bluetooth devices, and maintain long-term standby.

3.NFC label can provide system power on / off switching function, and close a large number of requirements to reduce standby power consumption of hardware devices for switching.
